Capital Slam Finalist Spotlight: Avonlea

avonlea

Avonlea may not yet be a ‘household name’ in the slam circles but from the first time people saw her in that context, they had to realize that the term ‘rookie’ didn’t really apply.

It was also technically untrue as she HAD slammed at CapSlam before, but not in quite a while, so when she showed up this season, with her haunting delivery of a break-up tale, she felt like she had been there all along.

Avonlea also performed at the VERSeOttawa Women’s Slam Championship and produced a very lovely book/CD package, Acknowledgements and Poems.

She was a last minute addition to the CapSlam semi-final line-up when another poet dropped out but there was no question that she belonged on that stage, and proved it by earning her way to the CapSlam Finals.

The 10th Capital Slam Finals take place on May 24th at the Alumni Auditorium at the University of Ottawa. Doors at 6:30. $10 at the door.
