CapSlam Semi-Final #2

Last week was the first CapSlam Semi-Final for 2014 and four poets advanced to the Finals.

Those poets are: Rusty Priske, Gavin Russell, Candice Bruchhauser and P-Rime.

Tonight we had eight more poets spitting it out for the last four spots!

The stage was set!

Jenica (the new CPC Volunteer Coordinator) was working the door…

The super-awesome Jennilee was working the bar…

DJ G.A.V. was working the CD machine…

Rusty was working the room… and introducing the crowd to the second CapSlam semi-final!

First we had three guest performances, starting with the out-going Volunteer Coordinator, Kay’la Fraser! Then we had TWO TIME National Champion as part of CapSlam teams, Brandon Wint! Then we had Words To Live By coordinator and all-around super-poet and person, Jenna Tenn-Yuk!

What a great way to start a show! Then, to start the slam, we needed to spill some sacrificial blood and who stepped up but the regular season CapSlam Champ and new Toronto Poetry Slam team member, PrufRock! 9.1 9.7 8.7 9.4 9.1…. great scores for a sac BUT… he also went 3:12 and ended with a 27.1

Then it was time to reach into the magic hat to see which poet would be the first to face the music…. and it was Ottawa Youth Poetry Slam Slam Master, Sarah Ruszala! 9.3 9.6 9.4 9.7 8.8 – 28.3! That is a pretty great score to set the bar for the round! (And NEARLY a time penalty as she went 3:08)

Next up was Avonlea. She had the least notice as she joined the list when PrufRock had to drop out, but she was sure up for the task! 8.9 8.9 8.9 9.1 8.8 – 26.7

The next poet up was Artemysia! 9.1 9.7 9.4 9.8 9.5 – 28.6!! A new high! Would these scores hold?

The first half of round one finished with Shaun Sullivan going for the laughs! 9.4 9.7 9.6 9.6 9.6 – 28.8! A new high again! Was score creep setting in?

What do you mean? We have vanquished score creep! Haven’t you heard?

The new poet up was Ceilidhe Miller! 9.5 8.8 9.7 8.8 9.7 – 28.0! Her scores were scattered, but still really solid!

She was followed by a D-Zaster! 8.9 9.1 9.2 8.9 8.9 – 26.9

The penultimate poet of round one was Kay Kassirer! 9.0 8.6 9.0 8.8 9.3 – 26.8

We rounded out round one with Billie the Kid! 8.9 8.6 9.6 8.5 8.6 – 26.1

Then came time for a ten minute break. The full range of scores was 2.7 points so, really anybody could still pull this out!

Round two started out with Kay Kassirer with Part two of their first round poem/story. 9.3 8.7 9.3 8.9 8.9 – 27.1

Next was the top scorer from Round one, Shaun Sullivan. Things did not go as well this time as his poem was not well received by many in the audience… including some of the judges. 9.0 8.8 8.0 7.9 8.7 – 25.5

He was followed by Sarah Ruszala! 9.5 9.4 9.0 9.6 8.2 – 27.9

Next up was Avonlea…. with a BIG poem! 9.0 9.7 9.3 9.7 9.2 – 28.2!

Wow. Artemysia was next and she performed a poem she had written on the spot, in response to Sullivan piece from earlier. The audience appreciated it… in a BIG way. 9.7 9.8 9.7 9.9 9.8 BUT she went 3:45 for a 2 point penalty, scoring 27.5.

Having to follow that was D-Zaster! 9.0 8.9 9.1 8.2 7.7 – 26.1

The penultimate poet of the night was Ceilidhe Miller! 9.1 8.9 9.4 9.4 9.2 – 27.7

The second round finished the same way the first did… with Billie the Kid! 9.2 8.7 8.9 8.4 9.3 – 26.8

The finals scores were as follows…

1. Sarah Ruszala – 56.2
2. Artemysia – 56.1
3. Ceilidhe Miller – 55.7
4. Avonlea – 54.9
5. Shaun Sullivan – 54.3
6. Kay Kassirer – 53.9
7. D-Zaster – 53.0
8. Billie the Kid – 52.9

So, the eight CapSlam finalists are!

Sarah Ruszala!
Ceilidhe Miller!
Rusty Priske!
Gavin Russell!
Candice Bruchhaeuser!

Make sure you are at the Alumni Auditorium at the University of Ottawa on May 24th to find who will be on the tenth CapSlam team!!
