CPC CIPS QUALIFIER RECAP!

Gavin

Tonight we came together at the Mercury Lounge to find out WHO would become the CPC/Capital Slam representative at the 2015 Canadian Individual Poetry Slam Championships!

With so much poetry, there was little time for further ado so host Rusty Priske jumped us right in with the Sacrificial Poet of the evening… DMP! 7.8 8.6 8.7 7.5 7.3 – 23.9

Harsh judges! Would they stay that tough? (SPOILER: No.) Would the poets be immune to score creep? (SPOILER: No.) Would there be great poetry from end to end? (SPOILER: Yes.)

It was now time for the magic hat and the first name out was… Gavin Russell! 8.4 9.5 9.1 8.8 8.9 – 26.8

Next up was Playto! 8.2 9.1 7.9 7.9 7.9 – 24.0

Next up was Nina Vuleta! 7.6 8.7 7.9 7.5 8.0 – 23.1

OYPS SlamMaster Sarah Ruszala was next up! 8.1 8.9 8.6 8.8 7.9 – 25.5

She was followed by London transplant Ceilidhe Miller! 8.8 9.1 7.9 8.8 8.9 – 26.5

The first half was rounded out by visiting Montreal poet, Kym Dominque-Ferguson! 8.9 9.5 9.5 9.0 7.9 – 27.4!

That P.O.S., D-Zaster was next up! 8.5 9.3 9.9 8.9 8.5 – 26.7

Welcome home (again), Billie the Kid! 8.7 9.1 8.5 9.4 8.9 – 26.7

She was followed by Ilana Belfer! 9.0 9.4 8.3 8.9 9.0 – 26.9

One of this season’s new voices, Shawn K was next! 8.8 9.3 9.5 9.1 8.8 – 27.2

The penultimate poet of the round was former Urban Legends champ, King Kimbit! 8.5 9.5 9.2 9.1 9.2 – 27.5!

We wrapped up with Marz, back from the deep north! 9.0 9.5 9.5 8.9 9.0 – 27.5!

Marz and King Kimbit tied for the top score of the round!

In this slam, each round had fresh scores but three poets each round would not be moving on so here we had to say good-bye to Playto, Nina Vuleta and Sarah Ruszala.

Then we were on to Round two… the Lightning Round! One Minute Poems!

Ilana Belfer! 8.1 9.0 8.9 8.8 8.0 – 25.8

Marz! 8.2 8.6 9.7 8.2 7.9 – 25.0

Gavin Russell! 8.9 9.5 9.4 8.9 9.3 – 27.6!

Billie the Kid! 8.3 9.3 9.3 9.3 8.2 – 26.9

Shawn K! 8.7 9.0 9.0 8.5 8.4 – 26.2

Kym Dominique-Ferguson! 9.1 9.5 9.5 9.2 9.0 – 27.8!

D-Zaster! 8.9 9.3 9.4 9.1 9.3 – 27.7!

King Kimbit! 8.5 9.4 8.8 8.8 9.3 – 26.9

Ceilidhe Miller! 8.9 9.5 8.7 9.2 9.4 – 27.5!

Kym Dominique-Ferguson got the top score but once again it was the bottom three who didn’t move on. Those were Ilana Belfer, Marz and Shawn K.

Round three was two minute poems and we were down to six poets!

Ceilidhe Miller! 8.8 9.0 9.4 9.3 8.7 – 27.1

Gavin Russell! 9.1 9.6 9.4 9.4 9.0 – 27.9!

Kym Dominique-Ferguson! 8.7 9.4 9.0 9.1 8.9 – 27.0

King Kimbit! 8.5 9.0 8.3 8.0 8.9 – 25.7

D-Zaster! 8.6 9.3 8.7 8.7 8.8 – 26.2

Billie the Kid! 8.7 9.5 9.1 9.1 9.1 – 27.3

Half of those poets don’t move on so we said good-bye to King Kimbit, D-Zaster and (By only .1!) Kym Dominique-Ferguson.

Gavin Russell got the high score in round three but it was Round four – Four minute poems – that would decided who the CIPS rep would be!

Gavin Russell! 9.3 9.7 9.6 9.8 9.9 – 29.1!!
