CAPSLAMRECAP – FEBRUARY #1

Nina Vuleta

February is a BIG month for the Capital Poetry Collective, as we have an exciting show every week!

Starting with week one and Capital Slam!

The lights are bright on Broadway AND in the Mercury Lounge as a crew from TFO was on hand to record some of the happenings. Jenica Shivkumar was on the stage in her debut as CapSlam host (and she did a great job!), and she kicked things off with the open mic.

We started with semi-regulaer, The Artist as she… well, basically presented an ad for her business.

Next up was a poet favourite (and the scorekeeper/timekeeper for the evening), Playto, as he read a nice poem for his date for the evening… his mom.

We wrapped up with Meggan Phelan who made her CapSlam debut!

Then it was slam time and you can’t have a slam without spilling a little blood! Tonight that honour went DJ RPM who stepped out from behind the tables and transformed into Rusty Priske! 8.8 8.0 8.7 9.0 9.1 – 26.5

Then came the real slammers and first out of the hat was D-Zaster! He didn’t do a poem as much as an off-the-cuff rant but the crowd dug it! 8.2 9.0 9.2 7.0 9.2 – 26.4

Next up was one of this season’s most regular performers, Nina Vuleta! 9.8 9.4 9.3 9.2 9.5 – 28.2!

Nina set a high bar and the first to try and challenge it was Obnoxious! 9.2 7.9 9.0 8.8 8.5 – 26.3

A newcomer to CapSlam was next up (though she has slammed at Urban Legends), Fatima Omran! 8.7 7.8 8.6 8.5 8.0 – 25.1

Speaking of regulars… DMP was next! 9.8 8.3 8.9 9.7 8.9 – 27.5

When was the last time you saw Just Jamaal slam? Well, here he was, but there was nothing ‘Just’ about him! Jamaal Rogers! 9.7 9.6 9.4 9.5 8.7 – 28.5!

Then it was time for our feature (after a short break), and it is always a treat when Brandon Wint takes the CapSlam stage! Brandon is one of only two poets to be on both National Slam Championship winning CapSlam teams and since then he just keeps getting better and better!

After the great feature, we were back to the second round of slam!

First up this time was Fatima Omran! 8.3 8.1 8.4 8.2 8.2 – 24.7

Then came Obnoxious! 8.8 8.1 8.4 9.5 8.5 – 25.7

Nina Vuleta was second after the first round… could she move up? 9.4 9.5 9.3 8.6 9.5 – 28.2!

We would see very quickly because Jamaal was next! 9.4 9.0 9.4 9.2 9.1 – 27.7

The penultimate poet of the night was DMP! 9.1 9.3 9.3 9.3 9.2 – 27.8

Then we wrapped up with D-Zaster! 8.9 9.7 9.6 9.0 9.4 – 28.0

FINAL TALLY

1. Nina Vuleta – 56.4
2. Jamaal Rogers – 56.2
3. DMP – 55.3
4. D-Zaster – 54.4
5. Obnoxious – 52.0
6. Fatima Omran – 49.8

Next up is the LOVE SLAM at the Nepean Museum on Friday, Feb. 13th! See you there!

Are people able to come out to just watch on the 13th? Where would I find information on events?

    • rpriske says:

Oh absolutely. The show starts at 7:30 sharp. It is $10 and includes free refreshments. It is the Nepean Museum!

The BEST way to keep informed of CPC shows is to add me (Rusty Priske) on FB. I try to keep things up to date here but it is not always as current.
