Finally we were back…. at the Mercury Lounge!

The home of slam in Ottawa is still getting back up and running – we were surrounded by a lot of primer – but that didn’t stop our enthusiasm for being back at home!

What a way to celebrate the return from the Canadian Festival of Spoken Word… a return to the Mercury Lounge!

DJ PrufRock was back spinning the beats and Rusty Priske was wielding the microphone as he called up three open mixers… starting with a newcomer to the stage… Ashley! Then an open mic regular, Crystal! Then another new face at CapSlam, Ocean!

(new to CapSlam maybe, but she is featuring at Words to Live By this month!)

Then it was time for the slam but what is a slam without a little sacrifice? So who would stop and throw themselves on the proverbial bonfire for the audience’s pleasure?

Nina of the Strange! 8.2 8.7 8.6 7.8 9.2 and a wee little time issue for a .5 penalty and a final score of 25.0

Then, we were off to the races! We had eight slammers so all would go both rounds, starting with…. Obnoxious!8.7 8.1 8.6 8.2 7.9 – 24.9

Next up was another CapSlam fave, Loose Change (doing a poem in Spanish!) 5.0 8.0 7.0 7.2 8.0 – 22.2

Our scorekeeper/timekeeper was up next! Playto! (Now, he did not time himself… he handed off the stopwatch to the host…) Good thing, too as he went 3:35 for a 1.5 penalty. 8.0 9.1 8.2 8.5 8.2 – 23.4

Next up was the current CapSlam rankings leader – DMP! 8.9 9.7 9.0 9.0 8.5 – 26.9

He was followed by new Ottawa resident but well established spoken word performer, Made Wade! 9.3 8.6 8.8 8.8 8.9 – 26.5

Next was longtime CapSlam superstar, Sir Realist! 9.5 8.3 9.4 9.1 8.5 – 27.0

Next up was our northern traveler, Marz. 8.7 8.9 8.5 8.6 8.8 – 26.1

We wrapped up with a former Urban Legends champ, King Kimbit! 9.2 8.6 9.4 8.9 8.3 – 26.2

Then, after a short break, members from the 2014 Capital Slam team shared poems, stories about the festival, and a lot of love and gratitude for everyone that made the team’s success possible.

Gavin Russell couldn’t be there but Candice Bruchhaeuser, Artemysia Fragiskatos, Avonlea Fotheringham, and Rusty Priske (along with coach, Ikenna Onyegbula) bid the 2014 adieu with a nice performance.

Then… it was back to the slam! All eight poets were back in the hat and first out was…

Sir Realist! He had a slight lead after round one… 9.4 9.8 9.7 9.2 9.0 – 28.3! Big score!

Made Wade! 8.5 8.9 8.9 8.5 8.7 – 26.1

King Kimbit! 8.2 7.8 8.9 8.8 8.9 – 25.4 (3:16)

DMP! 8.9 8.6 8.9 8.7 8.1 – 26.2

Marz! 9.0 9.0 8.6 8.8 7.8 – 25.4 (3:24)

Playto! 8.5 9.6 8.5 8.8 8.1 – 25.8

Obnoxious! 8.0 8.8 9.2 8.7 8.8 – 25.8 (3:19)

Loose Change! 8.5 7.7 8.1 7.8 7.8 – 23.7

Final Results

1. Sir Realist – 55.3
2. DMP – 53.1
3. Made Wade – 52.6
4. King Kimbit – 51.6
5. Marz – 51.5
6. Obnoxious – 50.7
7. Playto – 49.2
