CapSlam Semi-Final #1

Are you ready for this?

I’m not sure we were.

The room was packed, the poets were prepped, the vibe was humming….

Ruthanne Edward was providing the flow… Kay’la Fraser was the hostess with the mostest… Jenica was acting as gatekeeper… Jennilee was slinging the libations…

But FIRST, we had some special guest performers…

Starting with Marz! Marz was a rookie this year, but he qualified for the semi-finals, only to discover that he had some scheduling conflicts, so we decided to get him to hit the mic anyway! He came all the way from the suburbs to do it…

Next was a vet of the last two CapSlam teams, V, mourning the loss of Ms. Focus…

Finally we had a visit from CapSlam founder and VERSeOttawa Hall of Honour member, Greg ‘Ritallin’ Frankson with the ten commandments of slam!

Speaking of slam… but first, what do we need?

Who was ready to be the sacrifice on the altar of the slam judges?

How about Youth Team stand-out, Freedom Writer! The judges were a little scattered, but that is the job of the sac… to give them a practice run. 8.6 6.0 8.1 7.0 7.3 – 22.4

Then it was time for Kay’la to dip into the magic hat to see which of the night’s eight semi-finalists would have to drop hot poetry first.

It was Candice Bruchhaeuser! 8.9 8.5 8.5 9.1 8.9 – 26.3

Drawing the bullet is tough (though we have made great strides in limiting score creep…)

Next up was a vet of CapSlam teams past… Rusty Priske! 8.4 9.4 9.2 8.9 9.8 – 27.5

A good score… would it hold?

A big challenge was up next… Gavin Russell! 9.0 9.6 8.7 9.5 9.1 – 27.6

A new leader already!

He was followed by Lana K! 8.0 7.7 9.3 9.5 7.8 – 25.1

Uh… what? Were those judges listening to that poem? Seriously? Huge spread…

The second half of of the round kicked off with another team vet, Brad Morden. 9.2 8.3 9.1 8.1 9.7 – 26.6

Playto was a last minute addition after we had a poet drop out a couple of days ago, but he filled in like a champ! 7.9 7.2 8.9 8.0 7.3 – 23.2

P-Rime wants to round out his rookie season with some big results! 9.1 9.0 8.9 8.7 9.2 – 27.0

The last poet in round one was Joesph Sic! 8.8 8.5 9.3 8.3 8.6 – 25.9

So, as we went on break, the poets scrambled to find out where they were and what they needed to move on. Top 4 go to the finals…

First up for round 2 was Lana K. Did the judges get on the same page this time? 9.7 8.6 8.9 8.6 9.3 – 26.8!

Second up (again) was Rusty Priske! 9.4 9.2 9.9 9.3 9.0 – 27.9! Top score so far!

Next was Joesph Sic! 8.5 7.6 8.7 7.8 7.3… but he also got the only time penalty on the night, running 3:42 for a 2 point deduction. 22.9

Next was Gavin Russell, who led after the first round. 8.5 9.7 9.0 9.3 9.2 – 27.5

Playto started off the home stretch… 8.7 8.9 7.2 9.4 8.6 – 26.2

Brad Morden was fighting for that fourth spot! 8.9 7.8 9.2 9.4 9.0 – 27.1

Candice Bruchhaeuser KILLED IT THIS ROUND! 9.5 9.0 9.7 9.4 TEN – 28.6! Top score on the night!

We finished off with P-Rime! 8.8 9.0 8.9 8.9 9.1 – 26.8!

So, how did this come out? Who are the four poets moving onto the finals on May 24th at the Alumni Auditorium at UofO?

1. RUSTY PRISKE – 55.4

4. P-RIME – 53.8

Then, with great performances, but not moving on…

5. BRAD MORDEN – 53.7 (missed by .1!)

6. LANA K – 51.9

7. PLAYTO – 49.4

8. JOESPH SIC – 48.8

So, that is four finalists… but what about the other four?

Find out next week as eight more semi-finalists throw down on April 26th!
