What is better than slam?

More slam!

We got more slam tonight because while it wasn’t a usual CapSlam night, we had the opportunity to book poetry superstar El Jones! When the Halifax Poet Laureate, two-time National Slam Champion, and amazing poet and human being El Jones tells you she is yogin to be in town, you set up a show!

But first, the slam…

But REALLY first, the open mic…

Brad Morden was the host with the most. DJ PrufRock was the DJ with the…MeJay? Panos, Catherine and Mia were our uber-volunteers. Jenica was filming the whole thing and, who was on the open mic?

Brainstorm! Dovi! Chuck! ArRay-of-WoRds! One of those people was a newcomer to the CapSlam stage – no, not Ray – and ALL of them should come back and rock the mic some more!

For a sac poet we had a member of the LONDON Poetry Slam team, Erica Howes! 7.5 8.0 7.9 8.5 8.2 – 24.4

Then we went to the magic hat…

Actually, the real CapSLam hat has gone walk-about, so we borrowed Abby Kassirer’s hat… so who was drawn first?

Abby Kassirer! (Hat betrayal!) 9.0 8.6 8.6 8.9 8.8 – 26.3

The poetry czar was next up (nickname applied jus this moment by the chronicler of these events), Nicolai Gregory! 8.7 8.2 8.2 8.9 8.7 – 25.6

Stepping out from behind the DJ booth… PrufRock was next up! 9.4 9.3 9.4 9.0 9.7 – 28.1 – The bar has been set!

Dan Marciano wanted to do the open mic but there was no room so he slammed… a 6:37 long poem. 8.0 8.5 8.9 8.0 8.9 – 14.9 after the 1-.5 penalty.

Alex McDonnell was visiting, looking of this glass slipper and instead found CapSlam! 9.2 9.1 8.9 8.8 8.6 – 26.8

I hope James Ford isn’t around, because Billie the Kid sure was! 9.0 8.9 8.7 8.0 8.8 – 26.4

Ceilidhe was back for a return trip! She got to the second round the first time she slammed with us. 8.3 8.4 8.8 8.0 8.4 – 25.1

Time for a D-Zaster! 8.5 8.7 8.9 9.4 8.1 – 26.1

Nobody has touched Pruf’s lead… until Rusty Priske! 9.4 9.5 9.4 9.5 9.2 – 28.3!

OYPS Champ, Sarah Ruszala was next! 8.7 8.9 9.1 TEN 8.8 – 26.8

UL director, Just Jamaal got the penultimate spot in Round number one. 9.7 9.7 9.7 9.7 9.8… but he went 3:25 – 28.1

Tyrin Kelly finished things off with a short piece. 8.8 8.0 8.4 8.0 7.5 – 24.4

Then came poetry super wordsmith, El Jones! Was she worth adding a whole extra show for?

Anyone who saw her performance know stat answer is YES!! Halifax is lucky to have such a force in their midst!

Then came Round two! Only five poets moved on to decide the winner… starting with…

Alex McDonnell! 8.5 8.5 8.7 8.8 8.6 – 25.8

PrufRock! He trailed by only .2! 9.2 9.8 9.1 9.5 9.1 – 27.8

Then came Rusty Priske! Could he hold his lead? 9.5 9.4 9.0 9.0 9.2 – 27.6

Just Jamaal was ALSO back by only .2! 8.9 9.7 9.5 9.1 8.9 – 27.5

Sarah Ruszala finished things of… or did she? 9.0 8.9 9.2 7.9 9.0 – 26.9

Brad announced that there was a TIE for #1! Time for a head-to-head, sudden death showdown!

Rusty won the toss and PrufRock went first with a rant against Douchebags!

Then Rusty followed it with a story about walking home late at night.

The judges had their say and voted for Rusty by a score of 3-2!

(for the rankings they will both get a first…)
