CapSlam Recap for Oct. 5th

The last CapSlam had a killer show with an awesome feature but a disappointing crowd due to some event competition around the city.

Would this show, with superstar John Akpata as feature, draw more people?

(SPOILER: yes)

Would have our third different winner in three slams?

(SPOILER: yes)

Would it be an amazing show?

(SPOILER: yes)

We kicked off with DJ RPM setting the mood and Brandon Wint providing the host-power! They paved the way for a quartet of Open Micers, including a CapSlam debut, Nadia Cheney! Then we had the vocal stylings of Mayhem! Then no-cowering lyric of Covered in Wednesday! And the name-dropping diction of ArRay-of-WoRds!

Then came the slam… but we can’t do anything without spilling a little sacrificial blood and Emma Blanche volunteered! 8.5 8.5 8.7 9.0 9.5 – 26.2 Would the judges stay in that range or would the dreaded creep show up?

(SPOILER: yes)

Someone had to be first out of the hat and tonight it was CPC Director, Brad Morden! 8.0 8.4 9.0 9.5 9.6 – 26.9

Then came a voice better known over at Urban Legends, but it is always a treat to have MC The Poet at CapSlam! 8.4 8.6 9.0 9.5 9.7 – 27.1

While he isn’t actually a visitor (we claim all Ottawa poets… as does U.L. – we are one big happy family), the next poet sure was – Blaze! 8.5 8.6 8.7 9.4 9.7 – 26.7

Next up was far from a visitor… CapSlam Slam Master, Rusty Priske! 9.2 9.4 9.5 9.5 9.8 – 28.4

Speaking of big names in the running of things up inhere, next up was FORMER CPC Director, Sir Realist! 8.4 9.0 9.5 9.8 10 – 28.3

We had some Youth Slam reps in the house (including Emma as Sac). Next was Billie the Kid! 8.4 8.6 8.9 9.4 9.6 – 26.9

Next was YouthCanSlam Wild Card slammer, Abby Kassirer! 9.2 9.2 9.5 9.7 9.8 – 28.4

Speaking of teams… did we mention that the next CapSlam feature was the CapSlam team? Next was team member, V! 8.7 9.4 9.5 9.6 10 – 28.5

Followed by her team mate, and CapSlam Champ for 2013, Bruce Narbaitz! 9.0 9.4 9.6 9.8 10 – 28.8

Candice Bruchhaeuser made her season debut next! 9.0 9.4 9.6 9.8 10 – 28.8

P-Rime had only slammed once before (in York) but you couldn’t tell it tonight! 9.4 9.5 9.5 9.7 10 – 28.7

We finished off the first round with another Youth slammer, Sarah Ruszala! 9.0 9.0 9.2 9.3 9.4 – 27.5

Then came our feature – John Akpata! John spread some wisdom and poetry, along with some shred pieces with guitarist, Nathanael Larochette! Wonderful! The man is a legend in Ottawa Spoken Word… first CapSlam Champ in 2005, 2010 National Championship team and keeping it down at Monday Night Scribes for nearly ten years!

Still reeling from the poetry beauty, we were back for another round of slam! Instead of five poets in round 2, we had six, due to a tie for fifth.

Still random order and Bruce Narbaitz was first to go! 9.3 9.3 9.5 9.5 9.8 – 28.3

Next was Rusty Priske! 9.0 9.4 9.5 9.6 9.6 – 28.4

Third up in Round 2 was Abby Kassirer! 9.5 9.5 9.6 9.8 9.8 – 28.9

They were followed by Candice Bruchhaeuser! 9.1 9.2 9.5 9.5 9.9 – 28.2

CapSlam rookie, P-Rime was next to the mic! 9.4 9.4 9.7 9.8 9.8 – 28.9

Last up was V! 9.5 9.6 9.8 9.8 9.9… but she went 3:15 for a .5 time penalty… 28.7

For the second slam in a row, a late penalty cost a slammer the win!

1. P-Rime – 57.6
2. Abby Kassirer – 57.3
3. V – 57.2
