CapSlam Results for Sept. 21st

The second slam of the season and the city was out in full force, investigating the artistic world of Nuit Blanche! That meant a smaller crowd than usual for CapSlam, but the audience we had was enthusiastic and the poets were primed! Who would take Slam #2?

Mia Morgan was the only open mixer, as she has a new 4 minute poem to share.

When it came time for sacrificial bloodletting, Vince Kang fell on the proverbial sword and showed what happens when you get a time penalty. (A lesson unlearned by one of his Cinderella Story compatriots.) 8.8 8.9 9.0 9.2 – 25.8 after the 1 point deduction.

The first name out of the official CapSlam SlamHat was Gavin Russell. Talk about setting the bar early! Gavin came STRONG! 9.1 9.5 9.6 9.8 TEN – 28.9

Next up was Brainstorm! He told as a story last slam… and really, he did that again. This time it was in poem form. 7.8 7.9 8.7 8.8 8.9 – 25.4

Next was the third Cindarella Story member of the night – Alex McDonnell. 8.9 9.3 9.4 9.5 9.9 – 28.2

Stepping from behind the DJ booth was the runner-up last slam – PrufRock! 9.1 9.3 9.3 9.8 TEN – 28.4

Next was Mayhem… breaking the rules, unfortunately. Most be original work, Mayhem!

Next up was Covered in Wednesday. 8.2 8.9 8.9 9.0 9.0 – 26.8

The fourth Cinderella Storian, Scribe hit the CapSlam stage for the first time. 8.9 9.0 9.2 9.4 9.7 – 27.7

The penultimate poet of the round was Blank Marlo (formerly Rastabula, for those keeping track on home). 8.8 8.9 9.2 9.4 9.7 – 27.5

We would up with Ceilidhe, visiting from the London Slam scene! 8.7 8.8 9.0 9.1 9.3 – 26.9

Then came the feature set by David O’Meara! David is a well known poet around Ottawa but this was his first time sharing his words in front of a Spoken Word audience (strictly speaking). He was a hit! (Sonnets! Fuck Yeah!)

After a great set, we were back to the slam. Due to the small open mic and extra time, we decided that all nine poets would go up again!

We started with Mayhem… who did another cover. (We didn’t know until after the show…)

He was followed by Brainstorm. There was a Brainstorm warning over the Mercury Lounge… 8.5 8.6 8.7 9.3 9.4 – 26.6

Next was Covered in Wednesday (the most unique stage name we have had in a while…) 8.6 8.7 9.0 9.0 9.0 – 26.7

Ceilidhe was back to show us the love one more time. 8.8 9.0 9.3 9.3 9.5 – 27.6

Next was Alex McDonnell, telling us a story. 9.0 9.2 9.5 9.7 9.8 – 28.4

Blank Marlo was called next… but he was nowhere to be found!

On to PrufRock! 9.3 9.7 9.7 9.7 TEN! 29.1

Scribe was the penultimate poet of the night… 8.9 9.0 9.1 9.2 9.7 – 27.3

Last up was Gavin Russell… could he hold his first round lead? 9.4 9.6 9.7 9.8 TEN! It looked like it was good enough until… TIME PENALTY! 1 full point dropped him to 28.1

That cost him…

1. PrufRock – 57.5
2. Gavin Russell – 57.0
3. Alex McDonnell – 56.6
4. Scribe – 55.0
5. Ceilidhe – 54.5
6. Covered in Wednesday – 53.5
7. Brainstorm – 52.0
8. Blank Marlo – 27.5
9. Mayhem – disqualified
