What has happened this summer? We’ll be the first to say that traditionally the summer shows are little less… inspired. Poets often let a little air out after a competitive season and there is a bit of a loss of urgency. THe best thign that usually happens at the summer shows is that some new voices emerge.
Not this year! Not only are those new voices still appearing, but some top poets are hitting the stage and breathing fire! Last slam was won by PrufRock with Sir Realist, Rusty Priske and DMP following close behind. Three of those four hit the stage again tonight. Would we see a repeat?
BUt first, we had a treat as the first ever CapSlam Champ back in 2005 was the host for the evening! John Akpata! DJ RPM was handling the atmosphere and a list of open micers to set the mood!
First up was Paco Dboi… simple question: How does someone who says from Ottawa get so polished as a spoken word performer without us hearing of him? Paco was a straight up vet… while making his debut. Come out and slam, brother, you’ve got the chops!
Next was part of our volunteer crew – Benoit! He pulled out his guitar and at the prompting from the audience, he performed a song about his underwear. Apparently it is blue. This was wicked!
Then came visiting Toronto poet, Jeff Cotrill who kept as all laughing at the trials of a touring poet.
Lastly was Urban Legends finalist, D-Zaster… the Guardian Demon!
Then, the slam!
As always, blood needs to be spilled, and that task went to another Urban Legends finalist, ArRay-of-WoRds!
The audience was excited. THe judges were excited (were they ever! Wait until you see the scores…) and the first name out of the hat was…
Mia Morgan. Is it just me or has Mia been the unluckiest poet in the room a lot over the past year? 8.5 9.0 9.3 9.3 9.5 – 27.6
Next was Julie Vallon. Julie has slammed a few times with us, but not many. Her piece was very polished. Well done. 8.8 9.0 9.0 9.2 9.5 – 27.2
A favourite among many of the poets – Dovi was up next. 8.0 8.8 8.9 9.5 9.8 – 27.2
Time to set the bar. A real O’G was next: Sean O’Gorman. 9.3 9.5 9.5 9.7 TEN – 28.7!
How long would it take for someone else to reach those lofty heights?
Brad Morden – 9.5 9.5 9.5 9.8 9.8 – 28.8!
He was followed by our last Summer Slam winner, PrufRock! 9.2 9.4 9.5 9.5 TEN – 28.4
Next was CapSlam finalist, Candice Bruchhaeuser! Ready for a new leader? 9.4 9.6 9.7 TEN TEN! – 29.3! Wooooo!
Following that would be no picnic and that task fell to new Ottawan, Golbon! 8.5 9.6 8.7 9.3 9.5…. but she also ran 3:23 and ended with a 25.6
We still had two of last slam’s finalists to go, and they happened to both be next! Starting with Sir Realist. 9.0 9.3 9.3 9.4 TEN – 28.0
And, in his last Ottawa performance (for now) as he heads back to Vancouver, DMP! 9.1 9.3 9.3 9.9 TEN – 28.5
The penultimate slammer of the round was a member of the Ottawa Youth Slam team (competing at YouthCanSlam here in Ottawa from August 20th-24th), Billie the Kid! 9.4 9.5 9.6 9.7 9.8 – 28.8!
We rounded off with Chris Fash, who made people sit up and take notice… for over 4 minutes. 8.9 9.5 9.6 9.7 TEN – with a 3 point penalty he dropped to 25.3
So after one round we had to say good bye to Julie Vallon, Dovi, Golbon and Chris Fash as only 8 moved on to the LIGHTNING ROUND!
After a short break John dipped back into the magic hat for… who did I say was the unluckiest poet? Mia Morgan drew her second bullet of the night. 9.1 9.2 9.5 9.6 9.8… but she went 1:13 for a little time penalty. 27.8 – 55.4
Next was Sir Realist, trying to avenge his narrow loss at the last Summer Slam. 9.2 9.3 9.5 9.5 9.7 – 28.3 – 56.3 Good scores but the judges have been very high tonight and the poets have been very awesome tonight…
Next was Sean O’Gorman with a ‘porn poem’. 9.0 9.1 9.3 9.5 9.6 – 27.9 – 56.6
Defending champ, PrufRock was up next. 8.9 9.3 9.4 9.5 9.6 – 28.2 – 56.6
First round star, Candice Bruchhaeuser was next to the mic. 9.6 9.6 9.8 9.9 TEN – 29.3 again! – 58.6!
DMP followed that with a journey to Discontent Island. 9.4 9.5 9.5 9.6 9.7 – 28.6 – 57.1
Billie the Kid was penultimate for the second round in a row. 9.3 9.5 9.5 9.7 9.8 – 28.7 – 57.5
Brad Morden finished things off strong! 9.3 9.4 9.7 9.9 9.9 – 29.0 – 57.8!
With that we had to say goodbye to four more poets… including the top two from the last slam! Mia Morgan, Sir Realist, Sean O’Gorman and PrufRock would not be moving on. Big names!
Four poets were lined up for the last round. Who would be the new Summer Slam Champion? (I think you may have already figured it out…)
We started the third round the way we finished the second, with Brad Morden! Going to the vault! 9.4 9.5 9.6 9.9 TEN! 29.0!
Billie the Kid, making the most out of her CapSlam debut! 9.5 9.6 9.7 9.9 TEN – 29.2!
DMP, making the most out of his CapSlam swan song! 9.5 9.5 9.6 9.7 TEN – 28.8!
But it was Candice Bruchhaeuser’s night. 9.6 9.6 TEN TEN TEN!!! – 29.6!!!
1. Candice Bruchhaueser – 88.2
2. Brad Morden – 86.8
3. Billie the Kid – 86.7
4. DMP – 85.9
5T. PrufRock – 56.6
5T. Sean O’Gorman – 56.6
7. Sir Realist – 56.3
8. Mia Morgan – 55.4
9T. Dovi – 27.2
9T. Julie Vallon – 27.2
11. Golbon – 25.6
12. Chris Fash – 25.3
The next CPC Summer Slam is on August 3rd and the way they have been going, you do NOT want to miss it!
Also, the CapSlam team will be debuting at Pressed on August 14th! Come out, hear some great poetry and support the team as they gear up for a run at CFSW in Montreal this fall!
