CAPITAL SLAM SEMI-FINALS #1

Wow.

Did that just really happen?

Did that amazing night of spoken word superstardom and wonderful wordsmithing take us all to another level of awesoemosity?

Yes it did.

The show started off with Kay’la Fraser taking the mic to act as the host for the evening. Right off, you had to know something was in the air as she started to announce the open micers.

Everyone knows what open mics are like, right? You never know what you are going to get. Good stuff, sure… but THIS good?

Not very often.

Look at the list of names that were on the open mic tonight:

Ali Islam

Loh El

PrufRock

DMP

Ali Alikhani

Yeah. What a way to start off a show! We hadn’t even reached the slam yet!

SO, what about a sac poet?

What about the wonderful Sean O’Gorman? 7.1 7.9 8.2 8.6 9.5 – 24.7

Quite a range of scores. What would that mean for the slam itself?

The first to find out was Mia Morgan who, as always, brought some (as John Akpata would say), poetry to the poetry show.

7.9 8.1 8.3 8.4 8.8 – 24.8

Next was Vince Kang. From my opinion, nobody was as excited about getting into the CapSlam semis as Vince. So how did his slam post-season debut go?

8.3 8.3 8.4 8.6 9.2 – 25.3 – He notched ahead of Mia for the #1 spot… but there is a lot of poetry still to come!

Next was Rusty Priske getting angry. Kind of.

8.6 8.7 8.9 9.0 9.1 – 26.6 – A new first place. Is it score creep? We’ll see.

Shaun Sullivan – a new slammer this season – stepped up next.

8.0 8.5 8.6 8.7 9.2 – 25.8

From newcomer to vet, as ArRay-of-WoRds came to the stage, reading a poem he wrote that day.

7.8 8.0 8.0 8.4 8.5 – 24.4

Hey, weren’t there supposed to be a bunch of women in this semi? We have seen only one so far!

That must mean the final three are…

D-Lightfull! And she was!

8.5 8.6 8.8 9.2 9.2 – 26.6 – Tied for first… at least until…

V!

8.8 8.9 9.0 9.2 9.3 – 27.1 – V takes the top spot with one poet left.

Kimbit!

8.5 8.6 8.8 9.1 9.3 – 26.5

As we go on break, the poets scramble to see where they are – hoping for one of those top 4 spots to make it to the Finals on June 1st…

Rankings after one round:

1. V – 27.1
2T. Rusty Priske – 26.6
2T. D-Lightfull – 26.6
4. Kimbit – 26.5
5. Shaun Sullivan – 25.8
6. Vince Kang – 25.3
7. Mia Morgan – 24.8
8. ArRay-of-WoRds – 24.4

So, now what?

Another round of poetry!

We kicked it off with another sac poet… CauseMo!

8.7 8.9 9.0 9.0 9.2 – and a time of 3:18 so after a .5 penalty – 26.4

So who got the second round bullet? ArRay-of-WoRds!

8.3 8.7 8.8 9.2 9.7 – 26.7 – That gives him a total of 51.1

Next was Shaun Sullivan who had the dreaded 5th spot coming into the round.

8.7 9.0 9.0 9.2 9.2 – 27.2 for a total of 53.0. That is the highest score of the night so far. Will it be enough?

We’ll have a good idea pretty soon as 4th place Kimbit was next to the mic.

8.8 9.0 9.3 9.5 9.7 – with a time of 3:17, so after a .5 penalty – 27.3 for a total of 53.8 – First place so far!

Next up was Mia Morgan, spinning her webs of words.

8.7 8.9 8.9 9.0 9.0 – with a time of 3:12 so after a .5 penalty – 26.3 for a total of 51.1

Next was D-Lightfull! She was tied in 2nd after the first round. Can she hold? Can she move up?

8.7 8.8 8.9 9.0 9.0 – 26.7 for a total of 53.3. Kimbit still has the lead!

Rusty Priske – tied with D-Lightfull coming in – took the stage.

8.8 8.9 9.1 9.2 9.3 – 27.2 for a total of 53.8. He tied Kimbit for first so far!

Vince Kang got the penultimate spot.

8.6 8.7 8.8 8.9 8.9 – 26.4 for a total of 51.7

Lastly we had V. SHe was in first coming in. Could she hold it?

She blew the ROOF off of the Mercury Lounge!

9.0 9.3 9.5 9.5 9.6 – going 3:11, so after the .5 penalty, a 27.8 (highest score of the night) and a 54.9!

FINAL RESULTS!!

TOP FOUR GO ON TO THE FINAL SON JUNE 1ST!!

1. V – 54.8
2T. RUSTY PRISKE – 53.8
2T. KIMBIT – 53.8
4. D-LIGHTFULL – 53.3
5. SHAUN SULLIVAN – 53.0
6. VINCE KANG – 51.7
7T. MIA MORGAN – 51.1
7T. ARRAY-OF-WORDS – 51.2

There you have it! V, Rusty, Kimbit and D-Lightfull are going to the finals!

So who will be the other four?

To find out you have to come to the Mercury Lounge on May 4th to see the other 8 semi-finalists going at it!

They are:

Gavin Russell
Candice Bruchhaeuser
Bruce Narbaitz
Kay’la Fraser
Ali Islam
Brad Morden
Missaralee
Dovi

But first, come down to the Merc on April 27th to slam and see the new CIPS Champions, OpenSecret!
