The final summer slam of the year before a new season of Capital SLam awesomosity kicks off!

How did we celebrate it? Read on, Macduff!

CPC Director Brad Morden was handling hosting duties while SlamMaster Rusty Priske was the substitute DJ (though he is a pale imitation of DJ PrufRock… no pun intended)

Before we go any further, lets give a big shout out to all the volunteers tonight. In addition to Brad and Rusty, we couldn’t have done the show without the help of Robin LeWilliam-North, Ken Kicksee, Liz Kicksee and Ranya Fractal! Heroes all!

The open mic involved four poets, covering two languages. We started with Brigette DePape (yes, the former parliamentary page). Then Anna shared some french poetry. Robin LeWilliam-North then ALSO shared some french poetry (what are the odds of THAT?). Vessel rounded off the open mic (for now) with some powerful poetry!

Then, on to the slam! Just like Robin did double-duty as scorekeeper and open micer, Rusty did double-duty as DJ and slammer, our features were also judges and I think at least two other open micers were also judges… so was host Brad Morden pressed into sac poet duty!

He got a ten. Way to set the bar, Brad!

We had six slammers (if you haven’t picked up on it yet, the summer shows are sometimes smaller than our usual full rooms).

First up was Sam Turgeon-Brabazon. He was making his CapSlam debut, but he has been performing somewhere! He did a great job! 7.0 7.5 8.3 8.7 10 (yes, there was a very happy judge. 🙂 ) For a total of 24.5

Next was SlamMaster Rusty Priske, the best looking person in the place. (I will give you one guess who writes these recaps…). 8.0 9.0 9.2 9.5 10

Tywin Kelly made his debut in July and he came back! I sense a regular! 8.1 8.2 8.9 9.0 9.5 but mean old RObin said he went 3:28 so he ended with a 25.1.

Kayla Fraser (Robin thought she was called Killer Phraser, which is awesome), who does not CURRENTLY live in Ottawa, but there are rumours… blew the roof off the joint. 9.4 9.5 9.9 10 10. 29.4!

Rock Howell sang his piece…he is a pretty good singer/songwriter! 6.9 7.6 8.0 8.1 9.5… but mean old Robin said he went WAY over time, 4:03, netting him a 20.7.

The first round was capped my NEW capital region resident, former Vancouver poet, DMP! 8.5 8.6 8.9 9.0 10 for a 26.5!

Then came the feature, Salton Sea! For those of you at the finals, you saw them perform as the backing duo to Brad Morden’s incredible performance. They were EXCEPTIONAL! I LOVED the set! One highlight was when Brad joined them back on stage and… wow. Incredible.

They are releasing their CD on Sept. 1st. GET A COPY! I know I will.

Then…back to the slam!

The second round kicked off with Tywin Kelly saying SCREW LINEAR TIME! He went 5:08. 7.5 8.4 8.5 8.5 9.0, ending with a 19.4.

Next was Rock Howell who said, YEAH! I AGREE WITH TYWIN! and went 4:19. 6.9 7.0 7.8 7.9 8.0 and a 19.2.

Sam Turgeon-Brabazon came back up next. I am pretty sure we are going to see more of Sam around! 8.0 8.4 8.4 8.7 9.0 25.5

DMP kept making Ottawa his homebase with a 8.9 9.0 9.1 9.5 10 27.6

Kayla Fraser IMPROVED her first round score, believe it or not. 9.5 9.8 10 10 10 29.8

Rusty Priske (the dashing and debonair) got a 9.4 9.4 9.6 10 10 29.0

Final scores

1. Kayla Fraser 59.2
2. Rusty Priske 56.7
3. DMP 54.1
4. Sam Turgeon-Brabazon 50.0
5. Tywin Kelly 44.4
6. Rock Howell 39.9

Our next show is the season opener September 1st! Be there!

Also, our site will be down for a few days shortly as BIG changes are coming! Watch for it!
